How to Use Emoji Reactions in Gmail

You can now send emoji reactions to emails in Gmail 🥳.

Sometimes an email doesn't need a full reply, and an emoji reaction will do the job of acknowledging the email. A busy headteacher friend of ours explained this to us when she moved from M365 to Google Workspace at her new school, and it makes sense; it is a timesaver.

Step 1 - To submit your own reaction to an email, simply open the email and click the 'Add reaction' button to the left of the reply button.

Email from Lauren about her last office day, wishing a Merry Christmas and noting a return next year. Features a Christmas tree emoji.

Step 2 - Select your emoji. You can use the search box to quickly search for one.

Step 3 - You will see your reaction alongside the email. If you are using conversation view in Gmail, then you will now see a 2 to show your reaction as a reply.

If someone sends an emoji reaction to your email, you will see it as shown below:

Email from Jordan Hughes to Lauren Hughes: "That's almost a wrap on 2025. What a year. Thanks for your hard work!" Image includes a heart icon.

You will also see it against the email subject in your Inbox. Again, you can see the 2 in the conversation view.
