How to Summarise Email Threads with Gemini

1 min read

Post-holiday, the last thing you need is long email threads. Lauren returned from her honeymoon recently, and Jordan had been back and forth with many clients, meaning Lauren had a lot to catch up on. Enter Gemini in Gmail.

Gemini acts as a built-in assistant directly inside your inbox, the perfect tool for EAs wanting to catch their manager up. And the great thing is, you don't even need to prompt it; if Gemini detects a long thread, it will create an 'AI overview'.

Step 1 - Open Gmail (of course)

Step 2 - Open the long email thread

Step 3 - At the top of the email thread, you will see 'AI overview', a summary of the email thread in bullet points. It's as easy and quick as that.

Email AI overview shows Introduction and bullets about in-person training, Oct 8 and Dec 4 meetings, and HDMI/screen share setup.

If you need to dig deeper or ask specific follow-up questions about the thread, you can tap the summary box or open the Gemini Side Panel on the right side of your screen.

For most users, the summarise email threads feature is on by default, but you must enable the smart features in your general Gmail settings.
