Notes vs Comments in Google Sheets
Should you leave a note or a comment in Google Sheets? And what's the difference? Here is our guide to using Comments and Notes in Google Sheets.

From the Insert menu or when you right-click, you have the option to leave a note or a comment on a cell.
When to Use a Note in Google Sheets
Use Notes when you want to leave an annotation to give context, and it doesn't require a reply. For example, we add notes to list the expenses attached to a cost, or to alert others to what currency should be used.
In the example below, we are using it as a place to leave instructions.

It's like sticking a sticky note to the screen. When someone leaves a note, you will see a little black triangle in the cell; hover over it, and you will see the note.

When to Use a Comment in Google Sheets
Comments are all about collaboration (our favourite buzzword).
They might require a reply and an action. For example, I can tag Lauren in a comment with @lauren and ask her to check some training figures for me. Lauren can then come along, perform that action and resolve the comment when complete!
Lauren will be notified of the comment she has been assigned, so no one misses anything.

Shortcuts
But of course there is always a quicker way to do things.
To add a Note: fn + Shift + F2 (on a Mac) and Shift + F2 (on Windows)
To add a Comment: Command + Option + M (on a Mac) and Ctrl + Atl + M (on Windows)
